Frank Howard: The Capital Punisher

Frank Howard broke in with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his rookie season Howard hit 23 home runs with 77 RBI earning the National League Rookie of the Year award.

His best offensive seasons would come as a member of the Washington Senators uniform. He hit forty plus home runs in 68-70 seasons. In 1968 and 1970, he led the American League in home runs. He had the creative nicknames of “The Washington Monument”, “Hondo” and “The Captial Punisher.” Howard was a four time all-star. After his playing days, he managed the New York Mets and San Diego Padres. He also served as a coach for his several clubs.

He hit 382 home runs with 1,119 RBI with a hitting line of .273/.352/.499.

June 11, 1990, Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers, at 43, becomes the oldest pitcher to throw a no-hitter in major league history. He also became the first pitcher to accomplish the feat for three different, and the first to do it in three different decades. It is the 6th career ho-hitter for the hard throwing righthander. In this game he defeated the Oakland A's 5-0.

Jose Canseco Uses His Head

May 26, 1993. Carlos Martinez of the Cleveland Indians hits  fly ball to right-field that is misplayed by Texas Rangers outfielder Jose Canseco. The ball hits Canseco hits the right-fielder in the head, and goes over the wall for a home run. The Indians go on to win the game 7-6.

Josh Hamilton Hits Four Home Runs

May 8, 2012. Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers becomes the 16th player in major league history to hit four home runs in a game. He also had a double in the game to establish a new American League record with 18 total bases in a game. The Rangers thumped the Baltimore Orioles in Camden Yards 10-3. Each home run Hamilton hit in the contest came with a runner on base.

Nolan Ryan Completes 7th No-Hitter

May 1, 1991, Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers set a major league record by notching his seventh no-hitter of his career against the Toronto Blue Jays. Ryan, who holds the major league record for strike outs at 5,714. His career won-loss record was 324-292 with an ERA of 3.19. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.

White Sox Execute Triple Play

April 22, 2016. The Rangers hit into a triple play with the bases loaded in Chicago. The play was scored 9-3-2-6-2-5, the first time it has happened in major league history. The play happened in the 7th inning of the game, and the White Sox went on to win 5-0. The triple play is the first in Major League Baseball during the 2016 season.

The Chicago Cubs Acquisition of Ferguson Jenkins

On this day April 21, 1966. The Chicago Cubs send pitchers Larry Jackson, and Bob Buhl to the Philadelphia Phillies in return for future Hall of Fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins, outfielder-first baseman John Herrnstein, and outfielder Adolfo Phillips. Jackson and Buhl would combine to go 47-53 for the rest of their careers. Starting in 1967, Jenkins would win 20 plus games a season for six consecutive seasons. He would finish with a record of 284-226 with an ERA of 3.34, striking out 3,192. He was a three time All-Star selection, and won the 1971 Cy Young Award.  He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. He pitched for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and Texas Rangers. His #31 has been retired by  the Chicago Cubs, where he ended his career in 1983.

Mark Buehrle Hurls No-Hitter

April 18, 2007. Mark Buehrle hurls a no-hitter against the Texas Rangers. It is the 16th no-hitter in White Sox history, and the first at home since 1967. It is the first at U.S. Cellular Field. Buehrle faces the minimum of 27 batters. He picked off the Rangers Sammy Sosa in the 5th inning.

Burt Hooton Tossed No-Hitter vs. Phillies

April 16, 1972, on this day in baseball history Burt Hooton no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies striking out Greg Luzinski to end the game. We huddled around with dad to listen to every pitch after the fifth inning. Hooton would be traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1975, and would be a solid member of their rotation for ten seasons, and finished his career with the Texas Rangers. He was 151-136 with an ERA of 3.38 for his career.
